More on the hidden costs

On top of the basic application fee there are peripheral fees – this is why if you are applying it is wise to consider aiming for the full term of O-1 visa – 3 years rather than a per job application.

Your application must include a Union Consultation Letter. This letter can be applied for from your relevant Union or peer groups in your field. Some organizations will provide this letter free of charge, however, most don’t. Expect a fee of anywhere from $250 to $500. Note: If you are applying for the O-1 Arts MPTV, you will be required to submit 2 consultation letters. [Read our Consultation Letter Breakdown here.] These are valid for 6 months.

*A possible extra cost can include [Premium Processing]. If you need to get your visa as soon as possible. Most of us used Premium Processing on our Artist Visa application. [More here]

*Attorney fees can vary anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000 for an O Visa and $2,500 for O Visa Extensions [Read our ‘Hiring an Attorney’ Guide]. If they require that you pay for a consultation then ask if that fee can go toward your attorney fee. (Figures averaged from 10 attorney firms called.)

FAQ

Is the O visa worth the cost?

In many industries sponsors pay for the O visa application but for freelancers, especially artists, the artist may be footing the bill and it can be expensive. Cost cutting can include not using Premium Processing – it’s not always necessary. Some DIY their application submitting saving the cost of an attorney.
